Florida International University’s Freshwater Resource Division at the Institute of Environment is seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Associate position to examine the population and community responses of wetland animals (e.g., fish, crayfish, insects, wading birds) to water level variation and other stressors (e.g., fish invasions). The position will be focused on time series analyses of fish and macroinvertebrate communities using datasets spanning > 29 years. The 100% research position will include some fieldwork (perhaps 30-40 days per year), leadership in project development, and modeling of population or community time series data. Complementary experimental, modeling or observational studies will be possible depending on the specific interests of the successful applicant and available funds. The selected candidate will be expected to be an interactive and collaborative member of a large aquatic ecology lab at FIU and will and work closely with Dr. Dorn, the graduate students and lead technicians. There may also be opportunities to collaborate with other labs at FIU associated with the Institute of Environment or the FCE LTER. The successful candidate will minimally take lead authorship publishing from datasets already existing in the lab and could be asked to contribute to annual reports and assessments of animal responses to Everglades restoration. The position has funding for up to two years (salary and faculty benefits), with annual renewal contingent upon performance and continued fit with the needs of the lab. The position is immediately available for a motivated and intellectually curious applicant with proven quantitative, problem-solving, collaborative, and communication (written and oral) skills. The position will be located in North Miami, FL on the Biscayne Bay Campus of Florida International University and field work will occur in the Everglades and adjacent wetlands in southern Florida. A Ph.D. in Ecology, Fisheries or a related field and prior publications will be required at the time of employment. The candidate should broadly be interested in species interactions and population/community ecology in aquatic systems. Experiences conducting field experiments and statistical analyses of time series or spatial surveys are desirable. Ideal starts are between January and May of 2027. We are especially interested in applicants who share a commitment to high standards for science, curiosity about both basic and applied ecological questions, and development of new tools for community and ecosystem monitoring. We encourage candidates from under-represented groups to apply. Applicants should send a cover letter, CV and list of references directly to Dr. Nathan Dorn (ndorn@fiu.edu). Review of applications will begin in mid-November and the position will remain open until filled. FIU is a member of the State University System of Florida and an Equal Opportunity, Equal Access Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
