OCIC Field Technician

The OCIC Field Technician, under the supervision of the OCIC Curator, will serve to advance the reintroduction efforts of the OCIC regarding ongoing and potential future programs. All projects conducted by the Field Technician will directly correlate to the needs and goals of the OCIC, Eastern Indigo Snake Reintroduction Committee and partner organizations including The Nature Conservancy, FWC, USFWS, Coastal Plains Institute, Auburn University and others. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The OCIC Field Technician must be able to perform all the essential job duties listed below; however, this list is not intended to be all inclusive of the specific tasks that an employee in this position may be expected to perform. Major Duties: • Be an ambassador for the Zoo and OCIC at all times. • Live onsite at the Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve in Liberty County, Florida, from October-April to conduct pedestrian surveys and other associated EIS monitoring tasks. • Record survey efforts and observations in shared location accessible to OCIC management and program partners. • Publish findings as applicable. • Acquire necessary supplies to perform tasks within the project scope. • Assist OCIC Field Biologist and OCIC Director with ongoing research projects as needed. • Assist at the OCIC when necessary, particularly between the months of April-September. • Perform required tasks at OCIC according to OCIC Director, OCIC Curator, and OCIC Lead Protected Species Technician. Minor Duties: • Present findings at meetings and conferences as needed. • Perform any related projects and duties as assigned. • Follow all protocols and SOP’s put in place by The Nature Conservancy while utilizing their housing facilities, work areas, and working on the preserve. QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Must be a minimum of 18 years old. • Must provide a negative drug test result. • Must have a general knowledge of taxonomy, natural history, native Florida ecosystems, wildlife, and animal husbandry. • Must have knowledge of basic field survey practices. • Must have a basic understanding of wildlife laws and regulations specific to exhibitions, breeding, and domestic and international transport. • Must have the ability to do basic math and use a scale to weigh animals in kilograms and grams. • Must be able to demonstrate advanced abilities with Microsoft Office programs and GIS. • Must be able to work independently and in team-oriented environments. • Must be able to multitask with strict attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent organizational skills. • Must be highly motivated and demonstrate a willingness to adapt positively to institutional change. • Must be willing to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed. LANGUAGE ABILITY: • Must be a proven effective communicator, particularly as it relates to interdepartmental and interagency communications. • Must be able to communicate with staff clearly and effectively. • Must be able to respond to common inquiries, requests, or complaints from staff in a kind and courteous manner. • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. • Must be able to prepare clear and concise reports. • Multilingual is a plus. REASONING ABILITY: • Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. • Must be able to think logically and solve problems with little or no guidance. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: • Must possess a valid Florida State Driver’s License. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following have been identified as physical requirements of the job: • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. • The employee may be required to drive OCIC and/or Zoo vehicles. • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. • The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, reach, feel, and manipulate objects or controls. • The employee must be able to walk long distances in mixed terrain under variable weather conditions. • The employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk distances, traverse grounds, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel and crouch. WORK ENVIRONMENT: A large percentage of duties are performed outdoors in various weather conditions, ranging from rain, wind, cool to cold weather, and extreme heat and humidity. It is possible the employee will be exposed to dust, allergens, and harsh chemicals that if not handled properly, may present a health hazard. There is a risk of exposure to infectious diseases from daily contact with exotic and domestic animals including bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral pathogens. Work is performed around a variety of animal species with potential for physical harm from bites, heavy lifting, or instruments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
