The Suffolk County Water Authority is seeking a Fire Management Specialist to manage the comprehensive prescribed fire program operated by the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission for the 105,000 acre Central Pine Barrens region located in Suffolk County, Long Island. The FMS would be responsible for supervising the planning and implementation of wildfire prevention and mitigation programs and plans as directed by the Central Pine Barrens Joint Planning and Policy Commission with the goal to reduce wildfire risk in the Central Pine Barrens region, improve forest health, foster ecological diversity and natural resource conservation and restoration, and public awareness of wildfire risks and mitigation measures. Responsibilities will include overseeing the implementation of all aspects of the Commission’s prescribed fire management program in cooperation with public landowning agencies which includes the supervision and training of prescribed fire crews, the preparation of prescribed fire burn plans and wildland fire management plans for ecological and fuel management, wildfire mitigation, equipment management, and assisting in public education and outreach. This position will be responsible for the development and implementation of wildfire prevention programs to promote public awareness of wildfire risks and how to reduce these risks. In addition, the FMS will assist with the planning and operation of the Commission’s New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy and the instruction of NWCG courses. The FMS will represent the Commission on the Academy Board and at the Commission’s Wildfire Task Force meetings, a consortium of public agencies and fire departments with fire suppression responsibilities in the Central Pine Barrens region. The ideal candidate has certification as an NWCG certified Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2) and/or Task Force Leader (TFLD) equivalent and ability to maintain this certification during employment; the ability to pass moderate (carrying of 25lbs/2 miles in 30 minutes) level work capacity test; solid professional knowledge in the principles of conservation biology/restoration ecology, especially in pine barrens ecological communities; seven plus years of expertise in managing wildland fires, suppression, prescribed fire, natural resources and wildland urban interface fuels; experience with fire management strategies, preparing and evaluating prescribed burns, pre- and post-fire fuels treatment, fire and smoke management plans and conducting pre and post treatment/wildfire inspections; significant experience in leading prescribed fires and sign off on task book tasks per NWCG standards; experience with equipping and maintaining a prescribed fire equipment cache, water delivery and communications systems, operation of engines and motor vehicles, use of field equipment including ATV/ UTVs, utility trailers, chainsaws, mowers, pumps, hand tools and scientific and forestry instruments. This position is full time (37.5) hours a week, a designated term position based on NYS funding for the prescribed fire program. Salary is commensurate with education and experience ($90,000 to $98,000) with benefits (NYS retirement pension, medical, dental, vision, other).
