We are hiring one (1) seasonal Wildlife Technician to assist with a project surveying for plains spotted skunks and other mesocarnivores in southeastern Oklahoma from ~January 12 through ~May 7, 2027. Spotted skunks are rare and elusive mesocarnivores that were recently petitioned to be listed under the Endangered Species Act. This study continues and expands upon research on plains spotted skunk population ecology and landcover associations conducted since 2023 (See Brosend et al. 2026 in Wildlife Biology). The selected candidate will work closely with a graduate student to conduct camera surveys and live trapping for plains spotted skunks and possible side projects related to the study. The selected candidate must be able and willing to hike long distances (up to 20 km per day), over difficult terrain, in potentially extreme conditions (e.g., both cold winter conditions and warm spring temperatures and humidity). The use of olfactory lures is a daily occurrence and those with sensitivities to unsavory smells should consider this when applying. Additionally, candidates with a current rabies vaccine, live-capture experience and previous animal handling experience are encouraged to apply, though these skills are not necessary and those without will not be penalized during the selection process. Attention to detail, a good attitude, and a good work ethic are essential for this position! The selected candidate should anticipate, and be comfortable with, having limited connectivity (i.e., internet or cellular service) and shared (potentially co-ed) living conditions in a small cabin (or similar accommodations). Minimum Qualifications: • Progress towards a bachelor’s degree in wildlife ecology, biology, ecology, or closely related field • Ability to lift and carry over 50 pounds • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with coworkers and supervisors • Ability to maintain a positive and mature attitude and good sense of humor, even under harsh, inclement, or uncomfortable conditions (e.g., inclement weather, biting insects, venomous snakes) • ≥6 months of field experience with wildlife surveys, demonstrating an ability to work in a remote setting and hike over difficult terrain • Highly motivated with a strong work ethic • A valid US driver’s license (without restrictions) Desired Qualifications: • B.S. in wildlife management, natural resources, or a closely related discipline • Experience using camera traps to monitor wildlife as part of an ecological study • Experience running trap lines with box traps • Experience driving pickup trucks with and without a trailer attached, and/or in 4WD To apply: Please combine the following into a single PDF file as “YourName_OSUSkunks: (1) a single-page cover letter that details why you are interested in this position, your most relevant experiences, and your professional goals/aspirations; (2) a Curriculum Vitae; and (3) contact information (i.e., name, affiliation, email, and phone number) for 3 references.
