Location: Fairbanks, Alaska Position Type: Seasonal, Full-Time (40 hrs/week) Salary: Approximately $24/hour Start Date: February - April 2027 Application Deadline: October 19, 2026 The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) and Dr. Andy Seitz research lab, invites individuals to submit a statement of interest for the position of Fisheries Technician on our hydrokinetic energy research team. Please note, this is not the formal application process but an initial step to express interest. This position is part of a study assessing the impacts of hydrokinetic turbines on fish populations in the Yukon River in Interior Alaska. The successful candidate will work as a seasonal technician in spring and summer 2027 and, upon acceptance into the graduate program at UAF, transition into a funded Master of Science program in Fisheries at UAF beginning Fall 2027. The primary responsibilities of this position include: 1) conducting baseline research to describe the fish community in the Yukon River near the village of Galena, AK; 2) monitoring lateral distribution of down-migrating salmon using fyke nets and an inclined plane trap; 3) modeling the probability of salmon collisions with hydrokinetic energy devices; and 4) working with local stakeholders to describe community perceptions of fisheries interactions with turbines. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a B.S. in Fisheries, Ecology, Biology, or a related field (preferred); have strong quantitative skills (preferred); be respectful while working in remote, rural areas where fisheries are culturally important; be motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently and as part of a team; be comfortable working in occasional harsh weather conditions and camping overnight; possess skills to operate four-wheel-drive vehicles, tow trailers, and operate boats; be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
