This internship focuses on giraffe monitoring and research within a 27,000-hectare (66,700-acre) nature reserve in Limpopo, South Africa. The reserve includes bushveld, savanna, and woodland habitats and supports a variety of free-roaming wildlife, including giraffes, 17 species of antelope, and two of Africa’s Big Five species. The project contributes to ongoing research on giraffe populations, behaviour, and habitat use. Interns will participate in field-based monitoring and data collection, including identifying individual giraffes, recording observations, and managing photographic and ecological data. Interns work on assigned research activities with guidance and supervision from experienced researchers. Research Focus: • Giraffe population monitoring: Identify and catalogue individual giraffes by developing photographic identification kits using GiraffeSpotter, assess male-to-female ratios, and contribute to long-term population monitoring. Giraffe data collected through the project are shared with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation for research and conservation purposes. • Behaviour and ecology: Record observations relating to giraffe behaviour, external parasites, diet, feeding patterns, and habitat use. • Field data collection and management: Collect, organise, and process field data as part of ongoing wildlife research and monitoring. • Research participation: Work alongside researchers and other interns during field activities, gaining practical experience in wildlife monitoring, ecological data collection, and field-based research methods. Internship Duration: The minimum duration is 2 months. Conservation Fees & Logistics: A monthly conservation fee covers: • Support for ongoing conservation initiatives • Shared accommodation within the reserve in a fenced research camp • Transport (Polokwane airport pick-up/drop-off and fortnightly town trips) How to Apply Submit your CV to applications@bushveldbiodiversity.org If you're interested but your availability doesn't align with current dates, still reach out—we may have alternate openings.
