M.S. Assistantship in Evaluating Professional Readiness in Wildlife, Fisheries, and Aquaculture We are seeking applicants for a funded Master’s assistantship to examine the professional readiness of wildlife, fisheries, and aquaculture graduates and the competency needs of employers across public, private, and non-profit natural resource sectors. The position is in the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture at Mississippi State University under the direction of Dr. Dan Pilgreen. This research will investigate how existing educational experiences prepare students for careers in the field and evaluate employer expectations and needs for entry-level professionals. Using surveys of recent graduates, employers, and other stakeholders, the project will identify areas of alignment and potential gaps between educational preparation and professional competency needs. The successful applicant will contribute to all aspects of the research process, including survey development, data collection, stakeholder engagement, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, scientific writing, and dissemination of findings. Results are expected to inform educational practices and provide insight into preparing future generations of wildlife, fisheries, and aquaculture professionals. Minimum Qualifications · Bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, applied social science, or a related field. · Strong written and oral communication skills. · Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team. · Interest in social science research in natural resource contexts. Desired Qualifications · Previous course work or experience in human dimensions of natural resources or related social science disciplines. · Experience with survey research or program evaluation. · Familiarity with statistical software such as R and SPSS. · Experience with scientific writing and/or research presentations. · Interest in pursuing a career in natural resource social science, extension, or related fields. Salary: $20,000 (plus tuition, fees, and benefits) Preferred Start Date: January, 2027. Summer or Fall, 2027 start dates are negotiable.
